Résumé : | Sustainable forest management can't be implement without commitment of main part of forests actors (forest owners, contractors, and consumers...). Participation is necessary to ensure commitment, but does not always do so. This has become clear from some examples during Life programme, especially at the Boischaut and Lacaune demonstration sites. Those concerned agreed to take part in work on indicators (on the scale of a small woodland area), but did not wish to commit themselves to common objectives involving the actual use of the indicators selected. In France, this is a socio-cultural problem. People using the countryside (foresters, farmers, hunters, anglers, walkers and so on), who often have conflicting interests, are often unwilling to commit themselves to common aims to improve local area management. But, the situation is now evolving. Changes have become perceptible, especially since the start of negotiations concerning the documents on Natura 2000 objectives and PEFC certification.. Understanding goals of SFM (Sustainable Forest Management) is another condition for participation, so dissemination is necessary. |
