During the Congress, the Forestry and Rural Development Working Party was provided with a 2-hour time slot in which to hold its technical session. During this time, the chairperson allowed to opportunity for six papers to be presented as well as alloting time to conduct a short business meeting. The paper jointly prepared by Chairman Bengt Ager and Vice-Chairman Jack Smyth, Forestry and rural development (FRD) in industrialized countries : past and future work, led off the meeting. It provided the opportunity to present an overview of the Working Party's mandate as well as the subject matter areas the membership has focused its attention since its formation in Ljubljana in 1986. The six papers presented during the meeting are the following : - Forestry and rural development (FRD) in industrialized countries : Past and Future Work - Forest-based communities, economic revitalization, and ecosystem management : the story of experimental institutions and strategies in the Pacific Northwest - Evaluation of forest fuel systems utilising tree sections - Forest as a communal resource - Ownership factors affecting the partitioning of nipf holdings in Finland - Forest values and landowner objectives of nonindustrial private forest owners.
