Ports and navigation authorities all over the world are faced with problems of maintenance dredging and handling contaminated sediments which pose a threat to the environment. Among the solutions of this problem now being pursued in many location are removal of sources of sediment contamination, and treatment and clean-up of contaminated sediment. Interest in these factors led the POSW (Development Program for Treatment Processes for Contaminated Sediments in The Netherlands), the Rotterdam Municipal Port Management, and the IAWQ Specialist Group on Contaminated Aquatic Sediments to organise a conference to discuss all aspects of the science, engineering and management of contaminated sediments. Experts from all around the world discussed the many aspects of contaminated sediments from different viewpoints : in situ treatment technologies, ecological effects, risk and quality criteria, fate of contaminants, physico-chemical analysis, site investigation and characterization, management and control, disposal and beneficial use of dredge material, and national policies and strategies. To stimulate the exchange of ideas on currently discussed issues, four specific workshops concentrated on sediment remediation, ocean and open water disposal, treatment technologies, and development of sediment water quality criteria. The 56 papers selected on the science of aquatic sediments and their contamination, and the engineering of their clean-up.
