The use of constructed wetlands provides a relativity simple and inexpressive solution for treatment of pollution from small communities, industries, storm water, and agricultural runoff. This book presents a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the use of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment in 15 European countries (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United Kingdom). The history of the use of constructed wetlands and major features of this type of wastewater treatment are given. Types of constructed wetlands, main design parameters, vegetation, hydraulic and organic loadings as well as treatment efficiency, construction, maintenance, operation and costs are discussed in depth. European experience shows that constructed wetlands provide an effective treatment alteration to conventional treatment systems especially for small communities. It is the hope of the editors, that this book will contribute to a better understanding of the wetland treatment technology, and that readers will benefit from a wide range of esperience presented in the book.
