The long-anticipated autobiography by Ralph Brinkhurst, our esteemed colleague, perennial NABS member, past Society president, and world-renowned oligochaetologist, was recently put in print by Trafford Publishing [link to this publisher's website from "Additional Information, below]. In the words of the publisher, this is an outspoken autobiography by Ralph that gives the reader a window into his life as a biological scientist in university, government, the private sector and the environmental movement. The artistic cover of this book drawn by his daughter well-illustrates his interests in aquatic biology as a youth, even in difficult times, commuting on his bicycle - a loner amongst his childhood chums - in pursuit of aquatic insects and other creatures with but a net and a bucket. This autobiography synthesizes his education, career, research history, and global travels, and includes a chapter on his political and religious observations and opinions that paralleled his professional career. The book closes with a selection of his pensive and insightful poems, a listing of his graduate students and research associates, and an extensive bibliography of his peer-reviewed scientific papers, books, technical reports, and other publications. As you might guess, the majority of these bibliographic entries focus on one or more aspects involving the taxonomy, systematics, ecology, and pollution biology of aquatic oligochaetes and other annelids.
