The fourth international symposium on sturgeon was convened in oshkosh, wisconsin, usa, during july 8-13, 2001. it followed the traditions and goals of three previous international symposia held in bordeaux, france (1989), moscow, russia (1993), and piacenza, italy (1997): to provide a forum for exchange of knowledge on the biology, management, culture, and protection of acipenseriformes (order that includes sturgeon and paddlefish), and an opportunity for scientists and professionals to share their experience and develop collaboration for the benefit of sturgeon stocks and their users. seven days of symposium provided a variety of opportunities for 429 participants from 30 countries, including 182 oral and 85 poster papers at 6 concurrent sessions, technical workshops on sturgeon reproductive diagnostics, health management, and age interpretation, and the special video paper sessions. papers presented at the 4th iss were structured into 3 major themes and 17 subject areas: 1) general biology: phylogeny and morphology, genetic diversity, physiology, reproduction, disease, pathology and parasites, toxicology; 2) life history, ecology and management: stock assessment and status, exploitation and management, conservation, enhancement and restoration; population dynamics; ecology and habitat; law enforcement and cites; 3) aquaculture: hatchery stocking programs; breeding for restoration and conservation; domestication and commercial aquaculture; nutrition and feeding.
