For the authors,understanding farm management is essential in order to discuss ways of improving it directly with the farmer or to create and organize references for advisers.Thus,they conceive Decision Support Systems,as defined by Courbon,based on an expansion of the decision maker's reasoning.These DSS use Artificial Intelligence ideas,such a separation between managerial practice representation and simulation processing.This approach deals several models relative to work organization in cash crop,forage systems and financial management.Each DSS is based on a framework which is the expression of the management structuring into hierarchic and quasi-independent levels according to Simon.Each framework uses frames,production rules and specific language.The methods discussed here can be organized into several phrases: -Structuring and formalizing the farmer's decision rules via the frameworks, -Processing this knowledge to simulate the decisions and their effects in several climate or economic scenarios, -Interpreting the results to analyze the pertinence of the rules and the risk linked with the simulated decisions.This new family of knowledge-based simulators provides a dialog and learning support to the farmer and his adviser.It offers new issues for farmer's advices and extension services.
