Whole plant physiology seeks to understand how basic physiological mechanisms are combined to build organisms that grow, survive and reproduce in various environmental conditions. In this book, review and experimental papers have been assembled to show how the understanding of carbon-nitrogen interactions is improved by being analysed in a whole plant perspective. The chapters deal with the coupling of the carbon and nitrogen metabolism, the root/stem/leaf distribution of functions and matter, as well as with develipmental and acological aspects. They address the essence, the strenghths and the limits of the whole plant approach.
At a time of increasing concern for the consequences of environmental, changes on biodiversity and ecosystem processes, an integrated knowledge of the functioning of plant individuals should benefit researchers and graduate-level students ina large array of biological fields. |
