Résumé :

Forestry sectors in countries in transition face a range of challenges which reflect their natural environment and their stage of economic development. Until now, limited attention has been paid to education and to research into the development of national forest programmes in transitionary states. There is a long-standing need to ensure a sound basis for sustainable forestry development by linking the needs of forest sector development with research, and with human capacity development. Good education is a commonly recognized prerequisite for sustainable development in general. The intersection between forest policy, research, and training is therefore an important consideration in transitional economies that have competing priorities and scarce resources. This book is a comprehensive examination of the status of the major challenges for forest research and higher education in countries with economies in transition. As such, it is a basis for analysing the possibilities and appropriate mechanisms for incorporating research and education into the framework of forest policy development, in support of the overall development process in those countries. The content is intended to assist policy-makers, researchers, education authorities and other public and private stakeholders in the forestry sector in transition states and to help them identify potentially useful models and approaches of sustainable forestry development, while forearming them against possible pitfalls in policy development.
