J G. Hodgson, J.P. Grime, R. Hunt and K. Thomson - The systematic and standardized comparative accounts of the ecology of common British plant species, developed by the NERC Unit of' Comparative Plant Ecology at Sheffield University, are well known as a tool for a broad integrative approach to ecological research. The two books, Comparative Plant Ecology and the Abridged Comparative Plant Ecology have become standard reference works. The data contained in those books have now been made available in computer readable form. The Electronic Comparative Plant Ecology consists of a collection of standardized autecological information for the more common vascular species of the British flora. It is an amalgamated, electronic copy of the data tables which conclude both of the printed works Comparative Plant Ecology and The Abridged Comparative Plant Ecology, also published by Chapman & Hall. In addition to providing summaries for the 281 species in the Comparative Plant Ecology books, there are also data on a further 221 key species. For the many people who already use the Comparative Plant Ecology books, the advent of the availability of computer files on disk will be most welcome. The data have been substantially up-dated and are presented in several different formats for accessibility via MS-DOSä, Microsoft Excel®, Lotus 1-2-3®, and Macintosh®. Other formats (e.g. 5.25 inch disk) can also be made available from the NERC Unit of Comparative Plant Ecology at Sheffield University.
