In Italy, about 30000 ha of Douglas fir are growing in the northern and southern Apennines. Everywhere in Europe, this tree shows very good performances and good technological characteristics. A general survey of the present state of the international 1969-1970 IUFRO provenance test in Western Europe was carried out in the framework of the European Union funded project entitled EUDIREC. This paper in particular refers to the Italian northern Apennine sub-test compared to the whole international network. 3 sites were used for tests : 2 in Tuscany and 1 in Piedmont (North-western Alpine region). More than 120 provenances are compared, together with seedlings from 10 Italian artificial seed stands. Data concerned growth parameters, phenology, number of branches, basal density, forking frequencies, survival and stem form. The experiments suggest the best provenances for the Italian environment come from Coast Range-Oregon, Coast Range-California, higher elevation of California : 1080 Yelm, 1088 Castle Rock, 1103 Coquille, 1104 Brookings, 1116 Burnt Woods, 1128 Gasquet, 1148 Willits, 1149 Lower Lake. All these provenances showed in general low interaction genotype x environment, very good performance, good survival, low % of forked trees, good stem form and low number of branches. From a practical point of view, some Italian populations also ranked among the best basic materials, peculiarly the Calabrian provenance Mercurella and the northern Tuscany seed stand Acquerino.
