Résumé : | As commercial production of Douglas-fir seedlings inoculated with Laccaria bicolor S238 N is beginning in France, results of nursery and field experiments must be gathered to define the most convenient nursery practices. The goals are, firstly, to promote the overall quality of these new saleable seedlings, including mycorrhizal status, morphological and physiological qualities, and secondly, to limit the extra-charge mainly due to the cost of inoculum. The consequences of the main technical input and actions which can be used by nurserymen are analyzed and debated step by step. An integrated scheme, which includes the following ten steps, is proposed to nurserymen. (1) Nursery beds need to be fumigated. (2) The dose of application of mycelial inoculum can be very low. (3) After inoculation, sowing at high density is possible with a view to transplanting at the end of the year. (4) Fertilization seems to have no effect during the first growing season. (5) 1+1 transplants gave better field-results than 2+0 stock type, so transplanting is advised. (6) Fumigation of transplant beds is profitable but not always compulsory. (7) Fertilization can improve the second-year growth. (8) Many different herbicides can be used with no danger for Laccaria bicolor. (9) Late summer root pruning increases mycorrhizal development. (10) For early-spring plantations cold storage of bagged seedlings for 10 to 60 days favors the inoculated fungus and leads to enhanced field performance. |
