Viability assays were carried out in 1992 and 1993 from seeds harvested in 1991 and 1992, respectively, in order to test a possible phytotoxicity of the chemicals proposed for preventive treatments of cone and seed insects. Three conifer species, i.e. Douglas-fir, European larch and Scots pine were considered in the study. Assays were achieved according to ISTA rules. Germination was observed on filter paper, within an incubator set at an alternating temperature of 30°C (8 hrs) and 20°C (16 hrs). Light was provided during the high temperature period. Were considered as germinated the seed having developed a radicle two times larger than seed length. However, most of the tests were continued after 21 days (ISTA standard) as long as seeds were germinating.
