The term forest development relates to the natural dynamics of forest ecosystems without human impact. It also means the change of forests in composition, vitality and growth due to changing environmental conditions. Finally, the term describes the application of silvicultural concepts to forest management as a reaction to changed boundary conditions. The book presents 9 papers from 16 scientists on these 3 aspects of forest development. Succession from heathland to deciduous oak-beech forest is presented in consideration of soil hydrology and water turnover. Environmental impacts on forest ecosystems were investigated by manipulation experiment with reduced nutrient and water input in a Norway spruce ecosystem. Effects of management practices on ecosystem processes were illustrated by group selection and liming in European beech forests on different sites. Forest restoration is presented on degrated sites. The results of the long-term case studies have wide applicability and thus the book will be of interest to researchers in ecology, soil science, environmental science and forest science as well as to decision-makers on environmental issues and forest management.
