Résumé : | The genetic resources of the European elms are endangered by the drastic decrease in the populations of Field elm (Ulmus minor Mill.) and Wych elm (U. glabra Huds.) due to Dutch elm disease. In the case of the European white elm (U. laevis Pall.), the population decrease is a consequence of the disappearance of riparian ecosystems. The long term gene conservation strategy for elms in Europe should be adapted to the different population types and regeneration modes of the three species concerned and combine in situ and ex situ conservation. It should also take advantage of ongoing programmes such as the European Union-funded project for the co-ordination of ex situ conservation of elms in 9 western European countries. Consequently, the strategy needed should be pragmatic and based upon a 'step by step' approach. The three steps in the EUFORGEN elm strategy are : i) inventory of in situ conservation stands and proposition of urgent conservation measures, ii) implementation of ex situ conservation through the creation of a European database and core collection, iii) implementation of dynamic conservation through the definition of guidelines for the management of elm stands and seed-orchards. |
