The storms ,,Vivian" and ,,Wiebke" crossing central Europe in February 1990 (26.2.-1.3.) created extensive areas of wind-thrown forests. In Baden-Württemberg (southwestem Germany) 9 groups of scientists began to work together researching the development of phytocoenoses of these wind-throw areas. This book is a comprehensive version of the results elaborated between 1990 and 1998. Before we face another storm event, we should be very well informed about which species are living on wind-throw areas, which plant-, animal- and fungi-communities are developing there, which processes are driving the development and how to evaluate these facts. With this in mind, a program in Baden-Württemberg on. wind-throw ecology was organized by the Landesamt für Umweltschutz, Karlsruhe to investigate the communities of developing windfall areas. This book aims to present conclusions concerning forest and landscape management in a ,,stormy" future.
