The book was released at the XXII World Congress in Brisbane, Australia, in the Session 059 on Monday, 8 August, 2005. The book contributes to international scientific discussion and reflects on how changing paradigms are resonating in global arenas, specifically in the concepts of forest governance, environmental services, planted forests and the contribution of forestry in the livelihoods of rural inhabitants and the reduction of their poverty and marginalisation. The maintenance of healthy forest ecosystems and biological diversity has also been an important consideration in the chapters of this publication, as well as the role of several cross-cutting issues in enhancing sustainable forest management. The state and repercussions of these on-going processes on different continents have also been addressed in the section providing regional analyses. These issues are presented in 17 chapters and 54 boxes, all completed with quality, objectivity, and scientific independence. More than 150 scientists from all continents provided their input to this joint effort.
