The Congress is about management of living resources. It is about people who must wrest a living from the land. It is about the strategies and technologies that can and must be used to mect the present and future needs of both. It is about preserving the natural world and resources at risk because of imprudent developmcnt and profligacy. h is about the humait condition heset by poverty, dis-case, and misery simply because there are too many of us. It is, in short, about melding the needs of the natural world with those of people who manage and utilize it. Goals of the Congress are to encourage the ex-change of current wildlife technology, and scientific and management information to assist in the development and impie mentati on of conservation strategies, and m form a worldwide network of scientist and conservationists m facilitate the transfer of information relative to wildlife conservation. Technical sessions and workshops were designed to mecr there 2 goals. As its nome implies, the Congress features management; i.e., hands-on intervention to promet, pro-duce, and benefit wildlife resources. The Wildlife Society and its co-sponsors believe that there is stil] lime to make a difference in conservation at living resources through management. The following chapters are presented: - strategies to sustain human and wildlife communities - human population considerations in wildlife management - integrating biodiversity and sustainable uses of natural resources - education and effective technology transfer - ecotourism : what works and what does not - incorporating wildlife into development - trade, economics and identification of wildlife products - legal structures for managing wildlife - conflicts between man, agriculture and wildlife - landscape linkages and restoration ecology - techniques for monitoring birds and their habitats - techniques for monitoring terrestrial mammals - techniques for implementing wildlife management programs - advanced resource technology applied to wildlife management - a vision for the future
