This publication presents work carried out by the Commission Services based on existing data collection, i.e. CORINE Land Cover inventory which is the only exhaustive data set covering nearly the whole European territory. This is an attempt to more systematically explore potentialities and limits of titis tool in setting up landscape indicators. Following studies are focusing on three main aspects: Fragmentation, Diversity/heterogeneity, Spatial composition and organisation. The contribution of EUROSTAT deals with the potential of four selected. indices for capturing structural information. The importance of the spatial reference units to which the indices are related (spatial dimension) is also discussed. In addition, the aspect of temporal changes of landscape structures, the potential application of landscape metrics and the data requirements are treated. The DG AGRICULTURE proposes a simple and easy to compute land cover diversity index based on cells of 3x3 km2, aggregated then at regional level. This index is compared with the Shannon and perimeter/area ratio indices. In order to evaluate the effect of the specificity of the CORINE LC inventory, JRC compared landscape metrics with information from MARS (Monitoring Agriculture by Remote Sensing) sites. EEA presents a study, which focus on the assessment of the human impact on landscape fragmentation.
