The objective of the 1st IWA Young Researchers' Conference was to provide an international forum at which postgraduate researchers and young professionals working in the areas of water and wastewater technology and management could both present their research work and have the opportunity to network with their peers from different research institutions, disciplines and countries. PhD-level students from 18 countries (including Australia, Canada, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Turkey and USA as well as from Europe) attended for a high-quality programme, constructed from 65 original submissions, covering all aspects of water and wastewater technology/engineering and management for protecting the aquatic environment and including presentations on analytical techniques, sustainability, bioreactor design and operation, and priority pollutants. After rigorous review of the presented papers 19 have been selected for these proceedings. They include work on biological and physical treatment technologies, modelling, groundwater processes, river quality, environmental impacts and public health concerns. These proceedings thus comprise a digest of some of the most promising lines of contemporary research into waste and wastewater technologies and environmental impacts.
