In some countries, among which Italy, the law requires that an estimate of the extension of the areas that would be flooded in case of a dam failure has to be made. To this aim mathematical models can be used which can compute the time evolution of the failure. In this paper a mathematical model of the erosion of an enbankment dam by overtopping is presented. Despite its simplicity, it can account for all the most relevant processes that take place in the dam failure ; therefore it can be applied to have rough and quick estimaters of the outflowing discharge and its time evolution. Two examples of application of the model relevant to actual dam failure are shown.
