Résumé : | A multidisciplinary study of contaminated sediments was conducted on the Trenton Channel, Detroit River, Michigan, between 1985 and 1988. This project was part of the binational study between Canada and the United States which examined the Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels. A general assessment of ecosystem health was conducted, but the primary emphasis was to develop methods and strategies to investigate the sources, transport, fate, and biological effects of toxic substances with a specific focus on sediments. This study rovides direct evidence that certain regions of the lower Detroit River and particullarly the Trenton Channel, have symptoms indicative of a severly degraded ecosystem. Conversely, large expanses of the lower Detroit River were not substantially degraded, showed little or no sediment contamination and toxicity, and provide habitat for a vital and productive recreational fishery. |
