Résumé :
|
This PhD thesis is the assembled work performed at the Department of Microbial Ecology, Institute of Biological Sciences, University of Aarhus and at the National Environmental Research institute, Department of Freshwater Ecology. The thesis deals with the regulatory effects of bacterial nitrification and denitrification processes within estuarine sediments. In the denitrifying process, nitrate is reduced to dinitrogen. Denitrification predominantly occurs within the sediment where it takes place in the anoxic layers of the sediment. The nitrate which is reduced originates either from the water column or it is produces by bacterial nitrification in the aerobic layers of the sediment. Denitrification provides a sink in the global nitrogen budget and therefore plays an important part in controlling the degree of eutrophisation in waters subjected to substantial anthropogenic input of nutrients. Denitrification in estuarine sediments thus decreases the transport of nitrogen from land to the open sea.
