The importance of anaerobic digestion has been on the rise in recent years because of the increasing interest worldwide in applying anaerobic digestion technologies for pollution control and in the production of biofuels as a renewable replacement for fossil fuels. The role of the process in global environmental change is also a growing concern. These proceedings contain 66 papers selected from 130 oral presentations. Themes covered are : science of anaerobic microorganisms ; biodegradation of hazardous and recalcitrant microorganisms ; mechanisms and role of biofilms and granular sludges ; kinetics, modelling and process control ; innovative process configurations and reactor designs ; broadned and newer applications ; pilot and full scale experience ; landfills, leachates and solid wastess ; and global methane evolution
