The first RIBAMOD expert meeting, held in Copenhagen on 10 and 11 october 1996, brought together over 20 specialists working on aspects of river modelling and flood forecasting. These proceedings contain the expert papers presnted at the meeting and a compilation of the principal conclusions and recommendations which arose from the discussions. In addition to the papers and discussion there were informal presentations on the research priorities and programme of the European Commision and the progress of some current projects in the Environment and Climate programme. Although the primary topics iof this meeting were model structure and decision support, the discussions also covered other related aspects of flood risk and these are represented in the report of the meeting. During the discussion several important themes emerged, that is : risk assessment procdures, methods and terminology, integrated modelling and decision support, environmental change, linking of meteorological and hydrological models, scale, need of standards.
