The goal was to drill in the deep-sea portions of the atlantic and pacific oceans to gather information which would aid in determining the history and origin of ocean basins and continents and the processes that led to their information and modification. relying largely on already developped technology and considering weather conditions at high latitudes nine 2-month drilling legs were carried out in the central atlantic and pacific oceans.
