Résumé :
|
Although stream ecologists are well aware of the unique, site-specific characteristics of each catchment there is an increasing appreciation of the need to seek regional and global perspectives on the way streams function. in many temperate and boreal regions the structure and function of streams have been well studied. community and ecosystem-level concepts currently are being rigorously tested in laboratory and field experiments. comparative studies at different latitudes are just beginning and can provide some powerful tests of the generality of ecological theories of running waters. recognizing the increasing momentum in stream research, a meeting had been planned where ecologists could search for innovative and unifying approaches to the study of streams located in different biomes.
