Résumé :
|
The primary purpose of this book is to further the technical knowledge necessary to develop, calibrate, and validate an approach to assess fish assemblages. the use of environmental indicators, such as fish communities, provides a direct measure of environmental quality. using a variety of indices, cumulatively referred to as the index of biotic integrity, the prediction of a range of disturbances with an impressive degree of precision is possible. the perspectives section begins with information on ideas behind ecological health and biological integrity. following are a series of synthesis chapters that describe the rationale and decision-making process necessary to implement a program in biological assessment and criteria. in addition, a case study is presented that describes the involvment of stakeholders and partnering in the development of a monitoring program in the red river of the north. the guild and metrics determination section includes literature reviews for reproductive guilds and trophic dynamics of select of north american species. the regional applications of the index of biotic integrity section provides examples of multimetric and multivariate analyses for atlantic coast, pacific northwest, new england, hudson bay and pacific coastal streams. the application of ecological health concepts and biological integrity indices to resource types other than wadeable warmwater streams explores the development of indices for coldwater streams, great lakes nearshore, great rivers, reservoirs, and inland lakes. the last section of the book deals with aspects of calibration and data validation.
