Diatoms have been adopted widely as proxies for phytobenthos in water quality evaluation. Diatom-based matrics are used as tools for practical water management in most European countries. However, species identification approaches, despite recent considerable advances in diatom taxonomy, are quite disparatte among European diatomists. Gathering diatom taxonomists and ecologists in a mutual effort to clarify certain problematic aspects of diatom taxonomy is one of the solutions to overcome these problems.
