Résumé :

The introduction deals with the marine environment of the british isles and adjacent areas of the north sea and north east atalantic. most of the animal species occurring here are found also on the coast of mainland europe. north of bergen the marine fauna becomes increasingly arctic in character, while many north-west european species reach their southern limits of the coast of brittany. these two points mark the limits of coverage of this book. in some groups a few species known only from either the extreme northern or southern parts of this region have been excluded, at least partly because of continuing uncertainty over their taxonomic identity. for most groups, however, the keys provided will suffice for the identification of all but the rarest coastal species occrring between bergen and brittany.
