The contributions covers topics from the origins and evolution of dunes systems, the vulnerability of dunes to climatic and other environmental changes, the ecological dynamics of dunes and numerous management case histories from international to site-specific levels. there are papers on atlantic coast dunes, mediterranean dunes and dunes from the irish, north and baltic sea coasts, providing a comprehensive and comparative volume of studies. particularly noteworthy are contributions on the dune machairs of scotland and ireland, emphasis on planning and running long-term monitoring programmes in threatened dunescapes using gis and database archives, conservation of rare dune animals and plants and discussions of emerging national and european policies for coastal management.
