The objective of the 1992 symposium was to examine routine and innovative approaches used to measure marine phytoplankton production, to state their limits of applicability and to discuss the extent to which the different methods can produce consistent results. the symposium considered both the conceptual and practical aspects of diverse applications. discussions focused not only on various physiological methods but also on the small-scale methods of molecular biology and cytometry as well as the large-scale methods of bulk properties of the water column and remote-sensing of ocean colour.
