Our initial investigation of various permanent waters, particularly ground-water springs and wells of sardinia yielded no taxa other than those known from continent italy or other parts of europe. in temporary bodies of water, however, especially in large rock pools on basalt, diatom assemblages including many rare or unknown species were detected. of the 77 taxa from sardinia new to science, 76 are here described, frustulia alfinitosilviae having been described in lange-bertalot 2001. the species belong to the following genera: pinnularia (17), stauroneis (16); hantzschia (13), craticula (8), neidium (5), mayamaea (4), eunotia (3), sellaphora (3), navigiolum nov. gen (3), amphora (1), fallacia (1), gomphonema (1), lacunicula nov. gen. (1), inalveolata is described as a new subgenus of stauroneis.
