The use of single-grip harvesters in final felling is growing all the time in Sweden. Since 1993, SkogForsk has been studying single-grip harvesters to see how they perform in final felling. A total of 13 harvester heads have been tested. A number of improvements have been made to the harvester heads during the course of the studies, eg, as regards the positioning of the saw motors and the feeding force. However, there are still areas in which improvements are desirable; for instance: Improved feed system. The solid feed wheels generally used do not seem to be the best solution. Technology enabling bucking without splitting of the timber. Remote measuring-sensing. This would offer not only better and more reliable mensuration but would allow the design of the entire head to be optimized.
