Two Swedish manufacturers, Fiberpac and Wood Pac, have each unveiled systems for compacting logging residue into cylindrical bales known as composite residue logs (CRLs). The CRLs are 3 m or so in length, have a diameter of about 0.75 m and weigh 400-600 kg. Each one can provide an energy output of 1 MWh or more. The compaction units, which are mounted on medium or heavy-duty forwarders, weigh 5-6.5 tonnes. Handling of the CRLs is simple because they can be handled in the same way as roundwood throughout: conventional forwarders and roundwood haulage rigs can be used, and CRLs also open the door for efficient haulage by rail. The CRL systems are still under development and several questions need to be answered: Might the use of netting or solid side boards on roundwood haulage rigs be necessary to prevent material falling off during transit? What happens to CRLs during storage? What is the most efficient means of chipping CRLs?
