The problem of determining what constitutes a waste material, and also how or what types of wastes are regulated can be quite confusing, inasmuch as jurisdictional control of waste disposal is an integral part of the problem. Chapter 1 calls our attention to the problem.. Chapter 2 present basinc material relating to the nature of soils and their active surfaces. Chapter 3 tries to present some indication of the kinds of wastes generated, whilst. Chapters 4 and 5 cover the interaction of soil constituents with water and contaminants, providing thereby the basic principles which govern transport of contaminants in soils. The determination of the transmission properties of soil, and the procedures for obtaining the parameters or coefficients needed for the more common types of transport models are presented in chapters 6 and 7. Finally, contaminant transport modelling is covered in Chapter 8 in regard to transport of solutes, and in chapter 9 with respect to non-aqueous phase liquids. It needs to be stressed that the book does not cover modelling the coimpatibility that needs to be obtained between the physical and the analytical model. In the final analysis, if we have to design a safe and secure landfill that will perform its design function over a period of a hydred years or so, validation procedures that will provide satisfactory assurance of the model and its predictive capability are somewhat limited.
