The production of one cubic metre of timber (solid i.b.) delivered to the mill uses almost 200 MJ of energy in the form of diesel, petrol (gasoline), electricity, etc. This is the finding of a survey conducted by SkogForsk for three forest-management areas. The figure includes silvicultural and logging operations, and secondary haulage to the mill. Although secondary-haulage operations account for the largest share of the energy used, logging and silviculture together generate the largest amount of exhaust emissions. Reductions can be achieved through better planning of secondary haulage, improvements in the design of engines and closer control of fuel consumption in logging. The survey was part of the work being carried out by SkogForsk to produce basic data on the environmental impact of forestry. The aim is to furnish sawmills, joinery factories, pulp & paper mills, etc., with input data for life-cycle assessments of their products.
