This research's objective is to analyze the role that water markets might play irrigated agriculture. Its motivation is to test the hypothesis which states water markets provide more flexible and efficient allocation rules within the agricultural sector than centrally planned systems. To undertake the analysis, three theoretical models were developed. The first model simulates individual farmers' economic behaviour and focuses on land and water use among other variables. Relying on the first model's results, it is in principle possible to obtain water demand functions for individual farmers. These are used in the second theoretical model developed to analyze water markets among farmers who belong to the same irrigation district. The third and last model developed attempts to examine the effects and results of regional water markets.
