The 4th Workshop on Lidar Remote Sensing of Land and Sea, held at the University of Dresden, Germany, on 16-17 June 2000, continued the tradition of thematic workshops organised by the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL). The workshop was attended by more than 40 participants from Austria, Canada, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Russia, and the USA. It was jointly prepared by Dr. Sergey Babichenko, Institute of Ecology, Tallinn, Estonia, André Samberg, Technical University of Helsinki, Finland, and Dr. Rainer Reuter, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany. The main interest was focused on the development and practical use of laser-based methods for environmental measurements. It covered the main aspects of laser remote sensing including fundamental principles, advanced techniques, data processing and interpretation, ground truth methods and integration with ground-based and satellite-borne measurements. The objectives were to present the state-of-the-art and progress made in these technologies, to exchange information on national and international projects, existing equipment and methods. The purpose is to bring together scientists and users from academia, industry and government agencies to exchange results and ideas for further advancements in this field.
