This book presents the state of the art in ecobiology, morphology and genetics of allis shad in the east atlantic and west mediterranean, such as gathered during the past twenty years. the alosa genus is first described in terms of taxonomy, world geographical distribution and different features of particular interest. the first chapter deals with the developmental stages in the various species and populations, from the biological characteristics of the adult shad migrating back to the river to those of juveniles migrating to the sea, reproduction and sea growing phase. the second part addresses the morphological and genetic variability of species and populations by presenting the palaeontology of the genus and showing that complementary approaches are needed to identify stocks given the high polymorphism of the species and the interspecies hybridisation. lastly, the characteristics for its exploitation are presented, as well as a global analysis of the impact of human activities on the abundance and scattering of the stock geographical distribution in terms of negative and positive effects of river development (fish pass).
