A numerical method has been developed for estimating one-dimensional infiltration of water onto soil where the water added by precipitation at the surface was equal to or greater than the infiltration rate. The method then estimated redistribution of water within the soil after precipitation had stopped, taking in account hysteresis in the water content-pressure relation. Drainage into a water table was also considered. The method allowed for evaporation to occur at a rate determined by external climatic conditions or at a rate determined by internal soil conditions.
