Modern civilisation imposes heavy demands on water, for domestic supply, irrigation, hydro-electric production, navigation, industrial purposes, mining developments and other requirements. Fresh water supplies are limited in many countries and various water uses have already started competing with one another in several regions of the world. To maintain the waters for progressively greater demands for irrigated agriculture, for rapid industrialisation, for developing needs of domestic purposes etc. In order to meet the challenge of constant increase in the population of the world, there is an immediate need for conserving every available drop of water for beneficial use, and this deserves prompt and practical action by all those concerned with water resources developement.
