This paper uses evidence from three sources to evaluate the geotechnical and hydrogeological properties of waste. The effect of landfilling on leachate levels is illustrated using the results of leachate-level monitoring at two sites. The effect of landfilling on refuse permeability is shown by results from leachate pumping tests. The physical and hydrogeological properties of refuse were investigated using a large-scale compression cell.
