A technique is described for identifying the polyol isocyanate fire retardant and blowing agent used in rigid polyurethane foam manufacture when less than 0,5g of materials is available. Foam samples are base-hydrolysed and the resulting polyols and amines are analysed by electron impact and chemical ionisation mass spectrometry and high pressure liquid chromatography.
