This paper describes a feasibility study into a self-guided truck for factory or warehouse use. The guidance system is based on a rotating laser beam, acting as a bar code reader to provide bearings to enable the truck to triangulate its position and heading. The truck may be commanded from a land-base control system via an infra red data link to move to a series of destinations, turn on the spot or perform manipulations on the load. The novel drive system, based on standard A.C. induction motors is also described.
