Using an apparent viscosity value and assuming newtonian flow behavior is a commonly practiced method of estimating pressure losses for the flow pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) fluids in tubes. This procedure may leads to significant over or under estimation in pressure loss and power requirements depending on the rate of shear at which the apparent viscosity is determined. These problems may result in large errors in analyzing the performance of fluids handling systems and lead to improper sizing of pumps and motors.
