Even though the Thiessen polygon method for calculating average precipitation has been widely used for a long time, this method is illogical. In principle, the weights of precipitation stations should be determined, not by their geometrical positions, but by the meteorological conditions. For example, in some cases, a station situated near the centre of a basin may be almost useless for discharge forecasting, in spite of its large Thiessen weight. In such cases, due to micro-meteorological conditions, the rainfall in a small area around the station, may have a weak relationship with the areal precipitation over the whole basin.
