The present Forest Resource Assessment (temperate-zone) has been carried out in the framework of the programme of work of the joint FAO/ECE Working Party on Forest Economics and Statistics, a subsidiary body of the FAO European Forestry Commission and the UN-ECE Timber Committee. It constitutes a part of the Global Forest Resource Assessment 1990 which has been carried out jointly by FAo and UN-ECE. It is published in two volumes : Volume I - General Forest Resources Information, Volume II- Benefits and Functions ot the Forest Volume I includes the following range of basic forest resource information : land use classification types of forest and other wooded land species groups stocked and unstocked forest land exploitable and unexploitable forest and other wooded land ownership and management status number and size distribution of holdings change in area over the decade 1980 to 1990 standing volume and growing stock standing volume and mass of woody biomass annual increment fellings and removals by type and categories of forest and other wooded land Volume II consist of three parts : Part I : secretariat synthesis of countries' replies Part II : country by country presentation of the information received Part III : commentary on the results of the assessment.
