This proceedings summarizes the knowledge available to assess numerically the mechanical behaviour of granular media.Micromechanics of granular media arose from the necessity of a better understanding of the relationship between the global behaviour of such materials and the discrete phenomena which occuar at the level of particles.For several years,scientists have studied this question.Their wok focused on the general aspect of granular medium.Moreover,technological problems do occur during the industrial processes of fabrication, transportation or conservation of the materials.These problems have various origins: Soil grains (gravel,sand),ceramics,chemical metallurgical,food and agricultural products...They have in common types of rheological behaviour which are very similar,despite their disparate nature.A better apprehension of this behaviour goes through a micromechanical approach,that means a sharp analysis of the mechanical interactions between the particles.This work has brought together the views of scientists of various domains and engineers of different technological branches.On reading the proceedings of the conference,the scope of the studies carried out in this field throughout the world,may be realized.Also,it is hoped that the preoccupations of industrials in need of more numerous and complex materials today in ever larger quantities will be more clearly appreciated.In five sessions it was possible to treat different aspects of micromechanics of granular media: Geometry of the grains,of their bondings,of the pores;mechanical properties of the grains,of their bondings and their influence on the global behaviour; stochastic approach of the medium; transition between the discontinuous medium and the fictive continuum used in the classical calculations; industrial aspects of micromechanics.The final session establishes a link between theoretical works and technological preoccupations.
