This book places the measurement of open channel flows on a solid scientific foundation by developing a sound theory of water flow through long-throated flumes in their numerous shapes.Based on this theory and with much experience at adapting these structures to irrigation and watershed uses, the authors have preselected a number of measuring-structure designs for immediate application to existing water management needs. All structures in this book resemble the "long-throated flume" and the hydraulically related "broad-crested weir",which have several major advantages. These structures are recommended for all open channel flow measurements. The book is organized so that relatively inexperienced users can quickly understand the basic concepts and design flumes for immediate use. With more experience, the theoretical sections of the book can be used to custom-design complex shapes for special channel situations. This book represents an important contribution to the effective management of one of this planet's most widely needed, used, and wasted natural resources:water.
